I have really enjoyed getting tattooed over the years. The clattering of those old coil machines and the smell of green soap in the air. I apprenticed under Steve’s Tattoo in the 90’s, there were only two shops in Madison back then. I was painting and restoring vehicles for a living. That was my day job. I would brush off the Bondo dust and cruise to Madison at night. It was a 2 hour drive to mop Steve’s floor, clean the smoking ashtrays and get a few pointers on drawing tattoo flash. This went on for quite some time, It was a real tattoo apprenticeship, driving home late, half asleep at the wheel, getting up early the next day and do it all over again. There were some long weekends too. Sometimes till midnight helping customers at the tattoo shop . If I wasn’t couch surfing in Madison, sometimes I even slept in my old Ford at night. At least for a couple hours (It wasn’t very comfortable sleeping in a car.)It was all worth it just to get my foot in the door of this mysterious craft called tattooing… fast forward 32 years- still completely “driven” to quality tattooing, and continuing my passion of vintage automobile restoration on my days off.
